Inside the DB Box, power is divided into smaller circuits, each protected by an electrical circuit breaker or fuse.

These circuits distribute power to different areas of our flat, ensuring each area receives the required amount of energy. Then this energy is transported to the various electrical appliances/devices in our homes.

The MCB’s primary role is to shut off power to any HDB unit consuming excessive electricity, reducing the risk of tripping the entire block of HDB flats.

What is inside a DB Box?

In a Distribution Board (DB) Box, there are several essential parts:

  1. Miniature Circuit Breakers
    • Each circuit in a residential distribution board is connected to a miniature circuit breaker.
    • It has a current rating indicating the maximum current it can carry before disconnecting the circuit to prevent overcurrent, a potentially dangerous fault.
    • During power surges, the miniature circuit breaker will trip off the power supply to your home circuit and protect it from damage. 
  2. Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCB) / Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker(ELCB)
    • The RCCB or ELCB is a safety device that cuts off current flow to MCBs when it detects current leakage in any circuit.
    • It prevents electric shocks by cutting off the electricity supply immediately.
    • Every distribution board should have an RCCB or ELCB for safety, as it is the most important part. It can be identified as a switch with a “Test” button.
  3. Terminals
    • Terminals are connection points where electrical wires are securely attached to distribute electricity to various circuits and devices within a property.
    • These terminals typically consist of screw terminals or spring-loaded terminals designed to hold wires firmly in place.
    • They allow for easy installation and maintenance of electrical connections within the distribution board.
